    You can have a :

Together, positioning and differentiation form a critical set of foundation concepts site owners ignore at their own peril. One without the other means one risks having a marketing program that will not work.

Positioning in effect determines the nature of the customer base and is a critical decision in the early days. Prior to the Internet, positioning was considered to be a matter of segmentation, i.e determining ones geographic, demographic and psychographic variables. These are still important; however, search has created it's own set of variables and rules regarding key words.

In the old days, anyone needing money had to beg, pleading to a banker or an investor to please give them money. Most of the time the answer was no. But today, there is another way. "If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." — Unknown Source

Let's be clear, you must be clear on what internet marketing and social media tools you are going to use. It's best to have these tools well in place before you start you campaign. You can't walk down a long road without shoes. One should expect to build an email list during the campaign, it's best to do it months prior. And just because you have thousands in the list, don't expect that many of them to ding their credit card for you if they haven't bought anything before. This module presents a set of options that you have to go think through to have a fast start when the campaign begins.

It's often been said that before you start a journey, you need to have a map or you are forever lost. The social media landscape keeps changing. What worked five years ago is unlikely to work as well today.

And yet, there are certain landmarks that do not change, that are timeless. Email will always factor into your messaging. A website is of strategic importance.

This module focuses on the big picture, a strategic roadmap that will will have more details filled in as we go through the class.

Module 7. Copywriting: How To Write Powerful Content

    Rembrandt (1606–1669)

The story goes, "Content is king." And even in email, good content still rules. In this module, you will learn the copyrighting technique to make content interesting and motivational. To do so, you have to understand the nature of who to write. For example, if you write like a professor wants you to, you will fail.

You will learn about to major forms of email marketing. The first is the promotional email. This is normally a stand alone that goes out to promote a particular offer or announce an event. For example, a monthly meeting of an association has this structure if the organization changes topics or has a featured speaker. The other form is the email based newsletter.

    Module 8: Curating Content

If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.— George S. Patton

Those who succeed in their branding efforts understand that you have to set-up a process—a process that runs week by week and with time keeps getting better and better. But you don't have to be a Six Sigma Black Belt, but one must insure that the key process steps are in-place.

Module 9:  Email Marketing Campaigns: The Rules of the Game

Every game has its rules, and email marketing has a set of rules one must learn to do it well. Of course, one can just buy a list and sent out 50,000 and hope for the best. However, a wiser person (or a person with not a lot of money) will tend to figure out out to make best use of limited resources, which in most cases include both time and money.

Image: D-Kuru, Fractal forms on the cover side of a microwaved DVD

There has been a shift in marketing. In the old days, everything was text. They images and text were combined. Now, we are seeing away from both to using video. And not the high cost video we see in television, but low cost messaging within the incomes of everyone who has recent smart-phone.

This model focuses on marketing applications were smart use of streaming video can enhance the brand, capture leads, improve the probability of conversion and close the sale.

"There are no dead-end jobs. There are only dead-end people." -- Thomas Sowell, writer

Just as a house cannot stand without a strong foundation, so it is with leadership. To lead, one must study leadership.

A common failing of the business schools is to clearly distinguish between the role of manager and leader. Typically, professors teach that leadership is a small subset of management, all you have to do is "mange" people. Ya, sure. .

It implies that all managers need to do is act like an orchestra director, wave the wand, and beautiful music will come forth. And of course, they assume that people want to be "managed."

The truth is, people want someone who will lead them, someone they can follow. Instead, they suffer under managers who boss them around and manage them the same way they manage the work.

Module 1: The Nature of Being a Manager and a Leader

One of the sources of confusion even in the minds of the business professors, is the difference between functioning as a manager and acting like a leader. Both are critically important roles for those going into business and government. So while there are no lack of educational programs to teach management, there are fewer that focus on leadership.

Module 2: Choosing the Right Leadership Style

A style differs from a trait in a very fundamental way. For while traits are difficult (some say impossible) in the short run to change, the choice of a style should be based on the situation (context). Of course, many leaders lack behavioral flexibility, they cannot change their style based on the situation. For example, autocratic leaders are typically stuck, it is the only style they know so they keep using it even when it doesn't make sense. The style one choose in a crisis is different than the one exercises in times of less stress. Knowing what style to choose and when to choose it is an extremely important aspect of leadership.

Module 3: The Best Leadership Traits

    Edmund Leighton (1853–1922): Duty

The focus here is on the focus on Expectancy Theory: how what the leader expects and what the followers expect become dominant factors. The focus in on both the expectations and the nature of the situation. Some aspects of this include: defining goals, clarifying the path, removing obstacles and providing support.

Module 4: Leadership Skills — What to Develop and How to Development Them

The accounting profession has it work, people are not expenses on the income statement, they are really assets on the balance sheet. And assets appreciate or depreciate. If you want an human assets to appreciate, it's all about growing knowledge and skills. This session looks at the skills and knowledge leaders must build.

Module 5: What Leaders Must Know About Power and Influence

For leaders to be effective, they must exert power, they must know how to influence. There are many different types of influence, and it is a smart leader who knows what type of influence to use in what situation. Learn about personal and positional power, selfish and social influence and nine different types of influence that you can cultivate and develop.

    Module 6: Why Followers Follow

    Image: Ali Mansuri

Leaders don't operate in a vacuum, to understand leaders, you have to focus on followers. They have certain needs that leaders should be aware of, they can even cause a leader to do stupid things. Some followers choose leaders with virtues, others choose those with pathologies. It's important to understand why one is attracted to a certain type of leader since it tells you a great deal about yourself—both your good points and your bad ones.

This is due to the fact that leadership is influence, and we don't influence things, we influence people. And the more you understand about how cognition affects behavior, the better you will understand what you see.

Module 1: How To Emerge as a Leader

    Edmund Leighton (1853–1922) God Speed

Assume you have just been given a position with a new title—you are in charge of a group of strangers. The title and the position help, but you still have a challenge, you must emerge as there leader.

Module 2: What Makes a Group a Group and a Team a Team

Shea Smith drops back to pass. Image by BrokenSphere

Another type of leader in demand in today's world is the one you can build teams. A team leader is difficult, much tougher than being a supervisor of a group. However, teams are worth going after since teams out perform groups. And companies that know how to develop teams and their leaders typically out perform those who don't.

Module 3: Avoiding The Bad Leader

Stalin, Lenin, Kalinin in 1919. Image by: E rulez

We tend to focus on the good, but we also need to understand the bad. Bad leadership has two aspects to it: the first is the person who is not effective as a leader, who has little influence or who has to rely almost exclusively on authority. A second dimension is the person who has a great deal of influence who can cause people who can engage in unethical or immoral actions.

    Module 4: Personality Traits

Traits are characteristics, patterns of behavior and thinking that are consist over time. They are also strong tendencies to act in a similar way across many different types of situations. For example, an introvert consistently will not say much, while the extrovert is continuously uses the voice. For leaders, traits are valuable in two ways. First, by identifying traits in another, one can predict how that person will act in the future. Secondly, it is reasonable to assume that certain traits associated with the being a leader and others associated with being a follower.

Module 5: The Psychology of Success

    Viribus Unitis. Image by Tsui

Success as a leader begins with understanding what goes on inside. For example, an entrepreneur must possess both management ability and leadership skills if the business is to grow. Learn what the psychologist's have identified some of the common aspects important in success.

Module 6: Social Psychology — Understanding Organizational Culture

Three Backfeet Chiefs, Image by MatGTAM

Sad to say, one can succeed as a leader in one culture and miserably fail in another. It's important to understand the key organizational and national differences that impact leader influence. Rather than look at all national cultures, the focus is on East and West.

A Program in Learn and Master a Skill

                                Overview

This full class is oriented toward applying the skill development model and the mastery practices in focused on developing an application skill of your choice.

Throughout the program, individual skill builders have been applying what they know. Theory has ben sanity checked to know that it works, skillful practice has been applied to make sure that one understands the this one needs to employ to get better and better. There will be both the joy of victory and the agony of defeat. Quite satisfaction at making something happen and bone-grinding frustration when it didn’t. Mastery practices have to be mastered and processes have to be perfected.

In this case, one will take an application skills and really work hard at putting what you know to the test of the real world. Choice of an application skill is up to you. For example, you could choose one of the 12 verbal communication skills that underlie great leadership. Communication is a fertile ground to plants seeds of perfection since these skill-sets are so important and they tend to be neglected.

                                Key Steps in the Process

                                1. Define the Theory Set. Choice of good theory is a really important step. Bad theory results in skills not learned.
                                2. Come Up With a Practice Plan. A skill must be perfected in a particular context.
                                3. Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice Skilled Practice. This is really a cycle. One A cycle that one needs to keep improving.
                                4. Lessons Learned. At the end of practice, one needs to step back and take an entire look at the what occurred. What went well and what can be improved.
                                5. Next Project. Personal improvement never stops. Should never stop. It needs to be a habit.

                                  Role of the Instructor

The instructor will mostly function as a coach rather than as someone who shovels more information at you.

Module 1: The Search For The Fatal Flaw

“A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, The one I feed the most.”   George Bernard Shaw

Hieronymus Bosch- The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things

                                  Module Description

If each of us that the potential to do good and bad, we should understand the nature of the bad in hopes that we can prevent this from occurring. In other words, assuming free will (a big assumption), you will choose what path you travel down. Just as important, is your ability to recognize pathologies in others. In this case, we are going to focus on traits and behaviors, the kind of thing you can observe in yourself and see in others.

In this module, you will do what very few people do — document your flaws. For example, if you ask the average person what their top ten weaknesses are, they would look confused, the offended before going into denial that they have any flaws at all. Or perhaps they will give you a fake one—the kind of thing that you would do if you were in an interview.

The search for the fatal flaw is a characteristics that will cause you no end of grief if you do not take care of it.

"Power Corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." — Lord Acton. Said in 1887, these words still ring true today. But you should also understand that, money corrupts just as much as power.

I’ll admit, you seem to have zeal nailed, as well as faith and temperance. Self control? I’ve got my doubts based on your recent actions. I’m not seeing the kindness, love or generosity, either. That humility thing seems to be pretty far beyond your reach, too. Really, really far. I’m sorry to tell you this, but from what I can see, the sin of pride is a major component of your character. Dude, you’re old. You should have these things pretty well ticked off your shopping list by now. I’m seriously disappointed. Seriously.”

And you will find that sometimes you take a step forward, you will take a step back and it seems like you are standing in place. Don't worry about it.

                                  Module Description

The Ego, as the primary part of the mind that deals with realty, also has some characteristics that prevent it from achieving happiness. This session looks at a number of these limitations.

Freud was the first Western psychologist to point out the Ego was wrapped in a cocoon of largely unconscious mechanisms that protect—the way a blanket protects a baby. However, in adults, these Ego defense mechanisms filter and distort realty in ways that prevent the Ego from dealing with anxiety and dangerous truths. And so the Ego stays immature--often entering a state of arrested development.

And since most everyone will face difficulties at some point of life, it is important to understand how resiliency works and how mental toughness can be enhanced.

"The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority." -- Ken Blanchard

Many managers and executives depend too much on their authority -- a limited source of power that doesn’t work well on peers and the boss. Consequently, they fail to get the results they want.

Additionally, many individuals rely too much on positional influence, rather than developing personal influence. Positional influence is typically limited and constrained, but personal influence is something that can be grown and expanded. Another fact limiting influence, is that many tend to act selfishly like dragons hoarding their gold; rather than socially, like philanthropists who spread the wealth of their influence to benefit others.

This class expands your knowledge by providing practical influence techniques.  You learn about:

                                  How to project EXPERTISE.

Ways one can use developmental COACHING.

                                   The Nature of building CHARISMA.

Using VISION—The Power of Setting Expectations.

Unlike most full-time professors, he knows what employers want and what student lack when it comes to getting work (and getting better work). Murray has seen it over and over again; bad resumes and poorly written profiles and interviews that fail to impress.
