LEARN TWO MUST USE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS: Reflection and Vision

"On the journey of life, most people are lost. They lack a vision of their future and don't reflect to learn from experience— the term everyone gives to their mistakes." — M. Johannsen

Module 1: Mastering The Art of Reflection

“People Don’t Learn From Experience” — J. Edward Deming

Three Reasons To Practice Reflection for Mastery

    a. Life only teaches if we have a robust capability to reflect.

Otherwise, we continue to make the same mistakes over, and over, and over again. As one nurse explained to me, “I’m a problem solver — I solved the same problem 50 times last year.”

    b. Without reflection we live a life on automatic, repeating the same slip-ups, blunders and missteps.

Students keep getting bad grades without revamping study habits, memorization or test taking skills. Entrepreneurs expect sales to go up but refuse to change their business processes and strategies. Professors teach the same boring lecture year after year without making changes.

    c.  Skills Cannot Be Mastered

Reflection is an important tool necessary for mastering mental and behavioral skills such as: all types of communication skills, complex leadership styles, and self-mastery in general.

"We do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience.” Said by Many

The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates

Module 2: Using Vision and Imagination To Take Action

“You face a choice in life. You can do what you are told by parents and the bosses tell you or you can define a vision for yourself.” — Murray Johannsen

    Imagine The Future

Most people cannot come up with one time — not once in many, many years — of exercising their imagination in a classroomAnd if you somehow manage to get from K1 to K12 with your imagination intact, surely college will destroy it. But there is hope.

What was unused, what lies dormant, can be activated.

A vision is not a dream, it is not a fantasy. For mental imagery to be a considered a vision, it focuses on:

    a. The Future, and

    b. Taking Action.

In this module, you discover a way to use vision to construct your destination and imagine a path to get there.

Viktor Frankl in his book “Man’s Search for Meaning” once described such a vision. In Frankl’s case, it came to him when he was wallowing in the misery of daily existence in a concentration camp during World War II. When he was wallowing in the misery of despair, he saw himself presenting a lecture in a university setting about the psychology of the concentration camp. It was enough to keep him going in the middle of hell. And sure enough, years later this very thing happened.
